Working in Charming Ceará
We work in the state of Ceará in the North of Brazil. This state is maybe the most easy living of the whole of Brazil. People are friendly. Crime is low. The population has access to education and a minimal standard of life. With a booming economy, the government of Ceará has initiated a major program to attract foreign visitors. Its beaches are already big winners with Brazilian tourists whose arrivals have grown by 70% in the last four years. With an average of 300 sunny days per year, it’s not surprising that beach life is THE life, both for visitors and locals.
Ceará’s beaches and capital (Fortaleza) are destinations in their own right or ideal as add-ons to such favorites as Rio, Sao Paulo and the Amazon. Fly Brazil has frequent cheap direct flights (9 hours) between Fortaleza and Amsterdam. Tap Air Portugal flies every day directly from Lisbon to Fortaleza in only 6 hours. An alternative flight might be via Natal in the neighboring state of Rio Grande do Norte. Direct flights are operated from Amsterdam weekly. You can fly twice a day from Natal to Fortaleza with Brazilian national airlines such as TAM and Varig. Via Rio and Sao Paulo, Fortaleza is reachable by all major Airlines.
Sparkling Fortaleza
As for typical sight-seeing, choices, if not overly numerous, are enjoyable. Brazil’s fifth largest city is pleasant, clean and safe, the latter being no small factor given the bad press Rio received in years past. If not literally around every corner, good restaurants are never far away. While seafood dishes dominate most menus, other choices are readily available. Amongst the places you find the best Japanese restaurants where you can eat the best sushi and sashimi at a price 5 to 10 times lower than you will find anywhere in Europe. Fortaleza not only offers light leasure also it offers culture & arts.
The silence of Serra de Baturité
The Serra de Baturité is the range of hills closest to Fortaleza at a distance of about a 1 hour drive. A magnificent natural watershed, it is an oasis of green where coffee and bananas are cultivated around the cliffs and jagged spines of the hills. The climate is tempered by rain reaching a average of 26 ºC, the evenings are cool and morning fog obscures Pico Alto (1115 meters), the highest point in the state. The Serra is an official protected environmental area.
